This article aims to problematize the situation of teaching Portuguese as a foreign language from the specific context of teaching in Italy, in order to highlight salient characteristics and challenges. In the Italian context, the teaching of Portuguese is affirmed almost exclusively at the university level, and it encounters some difficulties to consolidate and expand. In this regard, some pressing issues are presented that involve the opportunity for convergence or coordination between the policies promoted by Portugal and Brazil, with a view to updating their practices according to the official discourse on international projection and global value of Portuguese.

Abstract
