I argue in this article that welfare linguistics should not be an ad-hoc label that is attached to any effort of supporting learners (or dominated speakers). Welfare linguistics requires a new plan. It should encourage both micro-approaches and macro approaches, and the two can be put into relation by using the social model. Welfare linguistics can add new objectives that are no longer specific proficiencies based on structural or interactional knowledge. It can actively contribute to fostering and strengthening a feeling of competence, relatedness and autonomy while using the target language. Last but not least, entirely new activities, course and curricula can be developed by departing from these principles. What, in a nutshell, is welfare linguistics about? It is dominant speakers ceasing to reproduce their dominance, because refraining to do so profits dominated speakers and society at large at the same time.
