Latin plays a central role in Medieval society; its influence on Romance languages affects not only the lexicon but also syntactic structures. Therefore the study of Latinate syntax is important in understanding Early Italian. The first chapter of this volume establishes the criteria to ascertain the influence of Latin, while the following chapters focus on the impact of four Latin constructions on Early Italian, namely: the ablative absolute; the passive periphrastic; the gerundive construction; the accusative and infinitive. The adoption of these Latinate constructions had a decisive effect on the strengthening of the vernacular’s fragile structures.
