: The essay recalls the slow emergence of a project-based dimension in humanistic research as a cultural need for renewal, which fully unfolded at the turning point of the 1970s, penetrating the university institution. It then argues how in the following decades, in connection with the defunding of the university and research due to neo-liberal policies, the project-based nature of research became a device for emptying out the essential features of humanistic knowledge.
