Irma Brandeis, dantista

The article aims at reassessing Irma Brandeis’ scholarship, which has been too often overlooked because of an excessive interest towards her love affair with Montale and her role as a ‘muse’ in the poet’s oeuvre. Brandeis’ career and criticism deserve, instead, a positive revaluation, for they are thought-provoking in many respects, both per se and in the context of XX century scholarship. First of all, I sketch her biography and provide the key elements of her academic life; then I focus on her scientific contribution around Montale and Dante, and I highlight her main interests and readings. Brandeis’ essays display her sensibility towards different critical approaches, as well as her being well-informed and ready to take part in the main scientific debates of her time; they provide noteworthy outcomes, especially with respect to Dante’s figurative language.

L’articolo si propone di rivalutare l’attività critica di Irma Brandeis, troppo spesso trascurata per colpa di un interesse a tratti morboso verso la sua relazione con Eugenio Montale e verso il suo ruolo di ‘musa’ nei componimenti del poeta. La carriera di Brandeis e la sua produzione scientifica meritano invece uno studio approfondito, perché presentano diversi motivi di interesse specifici e contestuali. Dopo aver brevemente introdotto la sua biografia e aver fornito le coordinate del suo percorso accademico, l’articolo si concentra sugli interventi critici di Brandeis – in primo luogo quelli dedicati a Montale, per poi passare a quelli danteschi; si cercano di ricostruire i nodi fondamentali del pensiero della studiosa e le letture per lei più influenti. I saggi di Brandeis rivelano una lettura sensibile a diversi metodi e ben informata rispetto a molti dei dibattiti dell’epoca, con risultati notevoli soprattutto in relazione al discorso sul linguaggio figurato dantesco.
