This article analyses some topics concerning forest history in the nineteenth century Veneto. Starting from a recently published research, which focused on the Cadore area (upper part of the Piave river basin), the article examines the main developments of this field of research and highlights other aspects that have not adequately been studied yet: an investigation on the networks and merchants involved in the timber trade, which allows to extend the knowledge acquired by recent studies on the Venetian period also to the nineteenth century; a study on the silvicultural publications and theories which also takes into account the climatic changes often associated with deforestation in the works of that time; finally, a research on the reorganisation of the timber trade that followed the development of the railway network and on the impact of this process on the Alpine communities most involved in the activities connected with forest exploitation.
