A high number of unprecedented extreme weather events have occurred in recent years in the Venice lagoon and the surrounding region. These events have triggered the questions of whether such large events are linked to climate change. In this study we analyse daily rainfall records from long-term gauging stations in the Venice lagoon catchment. The records are analysed using extreme value model based on the peaks-over-threshold approach: several models are employed to investigate the presence of changes in the extreme rainfall in the catchment. The impact of the parametrisation of the suggested models on the representation of change in high quantiles of the rainfall distribution is investigated.

Abstract

A high number of unprecedented extreme weather events have occurred in recent years in the Venice lagoon and the surrounding region. These events have triggered the questions of whether such large events are linked to climate change. In this study we analyse daily rainfall records from long-term gauging stations in the Venice lagoon catchment. The records are analysed using extreme value model based on the peaks-over-threshold approach: several models are employed to investigate the presence of changes in the extreme rainfall in the catchment. The impact of the parametrisation of the suggested models on the representation of change in high quantiles of the rainfall distribution is investigated.
