Investigating the Napoleonic era in terms of continuity and discontinuity, the article takes into consideration the role of businessmen through the case-study of Giuseppe Ferratini. His biography offers an insight into the concrete possibilities offered to businessmen, both in terms of social legitimation and economic advantages. Member of the Venetian democratic government in 1797, provisional French consul, delegate to the Lyon Congress in 1802, public official, member of the College of Merchants, contractor of the French army and purchaser of lands freed from trust, Ferratini illustrates the ways through which ‘new men’ could emerge on the political stage integrating a new composite élite.
