Abstract

Since the latest round of judicial reforms started in 2014 that focused on the ‘rule of law’, China has introduced an array of technological tools to support its quest for increased efficiency in the judicial system. By introducing big data and artificial intelligence (AI) as instruments to modernize judicial practice, China expanded the range of technology-assisted applications to more problematic areas, like improving the consistency of court rulings by using AI systems to assist judges in analyzing previous rulings and comparing evidence. This paper provides an overview of China’s efforts to develop technology-assisted courts and the main issues related to the use of technology in the Chinese judicial system, drawing some examples from the experience of the Shanghai High People’s Court.
