Paul Celan’s translation of the later poems by Giuseppe Ungaretti has always received much scholarly attention; moreover, at the beginning of the new millennium it became the object of distinctive philological attention. Starting from this historical-critical premise, and within the context of the sixty-year old German reception of Ungaretti, this essay tries to bring out the specific rationale of Celan’s translational approach that makes his work on Ungaretti an autonomous work of great poetological importance.
