In Akhbār al-adhkiyāʾ (Stories of smart persons), an adab work devoted to people of acute intelligence, Ibn al-Jawzī (d. 597/1200) deals with the stories of “smart women” (al-nisāʾ al-mutafaṭṭināt). The anecdotes about women are contained in a chapter contrasting - by its criteria of categorization - with the other chapters of the book. Does this specific textual arrangement aim at defining a typically feminine intelligence, or a particular way for women to manifest their intelligence? To investigate this issue, I will first look at the conception of intelligence that emerges in Akhbār al-adhkiyāʾ, also comparing it with the concept of mètis; then, I will question the anecdotes of the chapter on intelligent women from the perspective of Luce Irigaray’s theories.

Abstract
In Akhbār al-adhkiyāʾ (Stories of smart persons), an adab work devoted to people of acute intelligence, Ibn al-Jawzī (d. 597/1200) deals with the stories of “smart women” (al-nisāʾ al-mutafaṭṭināt). The anecdotes about women are contained in a chapter contrasting - by its criteria of categorization - with the other chapters of the book. Does this specific textual arrangement aim at defining a typically feminine intelligence, or a particular way for women to manifest their intelligence? To investigate this issue, I will first look at the conception of intelligence that emerges in Akhbār al-adhkiyāʾ, also comparing it with the concept of mètis; then, I will question the anecdotes of the chapter on intelligent women from the perspective of Luce Irigaray’s theories.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
