In Praxagora’s opening monologue in Ecclesiazusae the lamp is praised as the only trustworthy companion in women’s secret activities. It is customarily agreed upon that in lines 7-11 the merit of the lamp is helping women commit adultery. However, multiple reasons make this inter- pretation quite unlikely, and therefore this paper aims at providing a different exegesis, namely that the lamp is praised as it helps female autoeroticism.

Abstract
In Praxagora’s opening monologue in Ecclesiazusae the lamp is praised as the only trustworthy companion in women’s secret activities. It is customarily agreed upon that in lines 7-11 the merit of the lamp is helping women commit adultery. However, multiple reasons make this inter- pretation quite unlikely, and therefore this paper aims at providing a different exegesis, namely that the lamp is praised as it helps female autoeroticism.File in questo prodotto:
