Starting from some general considerations on the topic of ethnic identity in Diodorus, I propose three different surveys: the opposition between the Ionians and the Dorians; therefore the representation of the Sikanoi and the Sikels; the profile of the other ethne populating Sicily between the 5th and 4th centuries. The overall picture shows how Diodorus is attentive to naturalistic aspects (the volcanic phenomena or o the cult of the Palikoi) and to recent history (the servile revolts) more than the ethnographic description. The different peoples of Sicily exist mainly in their military function (as allies or as mercenaries), in line with his sensitivity to the urgencies of the late Roman republic.

Abstract
Starting from some general considerations on the topic of ethnic identity in Diodorus, I propose three different surveys: the opposition between the Ionians and the Dorians; therefore the representation of the Sikanoi and the Sikels; the profile of the other ethne populating Sicily between the 5th and 4th centuries. The overall picture shows how Diodorus is attentive to naturalistic aspects (the volcanic phenomena or o the cult of the Palikoi) and to recent history (the servile revolts) more than the ethnographic description. The different peoples of Sicily exist mainly in their military function (as allies or as mercenaries), in line with his sensitivity to the urgencies of the late Roman republic.I documenti in ARCA sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
