Abstract
This contribution presents a group of drawings dedicated to the Villa Pisani in Stra and its garden, contained in albums made between 1769 and 1771 by John Stuart, third Earl of Bute. The reliefs were executed at the height of the complex's splendour, when the interior decoration of the palace was being completed. If the drawings of the residential building confirm and specify the data provided by later surveys, the main interest of the small corpus consists of a sheet devoted to the garden plan. This is the most complete and detailed testimony of its Baroque layout. The drawings are signed by Paolo Santini, a priest at Santa Maria Formosa and best known for his work as a cartographer. But his activity was much broader and more varied as evidenced by his involvement in Robert Adam's Ruins of the Palace of the Emperor Diocletian or in Le Fabbriche e i Disegni di Andrea Palladio by Ottavio Bertotti Scamozzi.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
