The Venice Lagoon is a complex ecosystem always in evolution. Human interventions have profoundly altered its balance. This article explores the evolution of the Venetian port system with particular attention to the issue of anthropogenic impact. The first traces of this debate can be found at the beginning of the nineteenth century: for this reason, the work presents a bipartite structure and an interdisciplinary methodology that combines historical analysis with the most recent ecological investigations and planning policies
