According to several researchers (Balboni, 2004; Armellini, 2008; Ceserani, 2010; Luperini, 2013; Rigo, 2014; Bertoni, 2018), in the last decades literary education in Italy has entered a critical period due to an anachronistic idea of literature and to an equally anachronistic method of teaching it. On the other hand, the latest national reading statistics (Istat, 2018) show that the highest percentage of readers corresponds to young people aged between 11-17. At the same time, the Italian school context has become more and more multicultural (Miur, 2019). On these bases, in this article we present a hermeneutic and intercultural method for the teaching of Italian literature as L1, SL and FL. The method is based on the hermeneutic approach to literary education (Luperini, 2013), on the relational skills of intercultural communication (Balboni, Caon, 2015), and on the natural sequences of acquisition by Gestalt psychology (Balboni, 2014). Furthermore, we show the results of a case study implemented in five secondary schools in the Veneto region. The survey involved 278 students of Italian literature aged 16-18 and was aimed at exploring their perceptions about the teaching of Italian literature and how they would suggest improving it. A qualitative research design was implemented and data were collected through questionnaires made up of open and closed questions. Even if the results cannot be generalized, they validate our method as they demonstrate that students (i) are motivated to study Italian literature, (ii) appreciate researching the current significance of literary works and (iii) suggest giving more space to the interpretation of the texts and to the interaction among their peers.
