A critical analysis of archaeological research in the territory of Modena is proposed. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the main results achieved by means of a topographic approach to the study of ancient landscapes: settlements, anthropic landscape transformations, exploitation of natural resources, communication networks. Finally, an alternative approach is discussed, rethinking the relationship between the environment and humans.

Abstract
