The genesis of Leoš Janáček's second string quartet to which he gave the title «Listy důvěrné» («Intimate Letters») is discussed with reference to the composer's correspondence with Kamila Stösslová, the young woman he fell in love with in the last decade of his life. Janáček's letters during the successive phases of its creation reveal the profound influence of his personal experiences on his composition. In this respect, the quartet bears a certain resemblance to another work for string quartet, the «Lyrische Suite» by Alban Berg.

L’articolo esamina la genesi del Quartetto per archi «Lettere intime» di Leoš Janáček attraverso il carteggio intercorso tra il compositore e la giovane Kamila Stösslová, di cui egli si innamorò nell’ultimo decennio della sua esistenza. Percorrendo, attraverso le lettere, le fasi della creazione, emerge la profonda influenza del vissuto biografico dell’autore sulla composizione. Per tale aspetto, il pezzo rivela alcune affinità con la «Lyrische Suite» di Alban Berg, scritta anch’essa per quartetto d’archi.
