In 1980-1981 stratigraphic excavations were carried out in the western section of the Forum of Pompeii by P. Arthur on behalf of the local Superintendence. The majority of the findings remained unpublished until a research team, led by the University of Venice Ca’ Foscari, undertook the task of studying and publishing the large number of retrieved ceramics. These provide an exceptionally valuable overview on socio-economic trends over a large span of time: from the Archaic period to 79 AD. The study of the ceramics involved the collaboration of several specialists and resulted in two forthcoming monographic volumes. The first volume focuses on the amphorae: more than 440 vessels have been studied and presented, covering various productions (Archaic amphorae, Greek and Italic amphorae, amphorae of Punic tradition, Punic-Gaditan amphorae, vessels for the transportation of salsamenta and fish products and finally early imperial amphorae). Research has been implemented by some interdisciplinary studies on specific fabrics and palaeocontents. An synthesis of the most relevant conclusions will be offered below, while the reader will find more details in the forthcoming volume: Scambi e commerci in area vesuviana: i dati delle anfore dai saggi stratigrafici I.E. (Impianto Elettrico) 1980-81 nel Foro di Pompei, edited by D. Bernal Casasola e D. Cottica.

Abstract

Cottica.
