The paper aims at outlining the historiographical premises of the current interests towards the history of communication and information in early modern Europe. It takes its inspiration from the history of the forms of written communication and, overcoming the limits of the history of contemporary journalism, places itself at the crossroads between cultural history and political history. Its tasks include tracing the functioning of networks and information fl ows both on a large scale and in well-defined environments.
