The work of Manthos Ioannou entitled Disgrace and Captivity of the Morea (Συμφορά και αἰχμαλωσία Μορέως) reports the war of Morea (1714-1718), an important conquest of Venice in Greek territory. It is an example of how historical events were elaborated in verse and in the “vulgar” spoken Greek language and it is examined for its historical context and its editorial issues. This poem was printed for the first time in Venice between 1725 and 1726 and it had a great editorial for- tune in Venetian typographies between the twenties of the eighteenth and seventies of the nineteenth century. The work of Ioannou presents different moments from the last phase of the Venetian domination in the Peloponnese and it becomes an important source on the war of Morea.
