«There’s a place for us»: Giulietta e Romeo nel West-Side

The essay deals with the theme of fidelity to the source, Romeo and Juliet, by the authors of the musical West Side Story, a masterpiece by Leonard Bernstein and librettists Arthur Laurents and Steve Sondheim. Although in this work is updated in the context of the clash between youth gangs in New York in the late fifties, the author claims that it is the most faithful adaptation, in the spirit if not in the letter, of the play of William Shakespeare.

Il saggio affronta il tema della fedeltà all'ipotesto, Romeo and Juliet, da parte degli autori del musical West Side Story, capolavoro di Leonard Bernstein e dei librettisti Arthur Laurents e Steve Sondheim. Anche se in quest'opera viene attualizzata nel contesto dello scontro fra bande giovanile nella New York dei tardi ani Cinquanta, l'autore sostiene che sia l'adattamento più fedele, nello spirito se non nella lettera, del play di William Shakespeare.
