The Old Spanish ¿(a)dólo? particle has barely been described in the literature. This study provides an analysis of the ¿(a)dólo? sentences as existential/presentational constructions. Likewise, the paper will give some insight into the history of interrogative acts paying close attention to rhetorical questions. The analysis will show that the grammatical properties and pragmatic functions of ¿(a)dólo? enable this particle to signal rhetoricity in Old Spanish. Methodologically, this study profits from a parallel corpus of Old Spanish bible translations and their Latin or Hebrew original texts (Biblia Medieval).

Abstract
The Old Spanish ¿(a)dólo? particle has barely been described in the literature. This study provides an analysis of the ¿(a)dólo? sentences as existential/presentational constructions. Likewise, the paper will give some insight into the history of interrogative acts paying close attention to rhetorical questions. The analysis will show that the grammatical properties and pragmatic functions of ¿(a)dólo? enable this particle to signal rhetoricity in Old Spanish. Methodologically, this study profits from a parallel corpus of Old Spanish bible translations and their Latin or Hebrew original texts (Biblia Medieval).File | Dimensione | Formato | |
