This study of musical activities at the Franciscan church of San Francesco, Treviso, during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries is based largely on archival documentation – in particular, account books and chapter records – now preserved in the local Archivio di Stato. The following categories of information are considered: 1. the presence of regularly salaried maestri di cappella and other musicians; 2. the compilation of musical manuscripts for internal use; 3. organs, organ builders and organists; 4. the occasional employment of musicians during important liturgical events (in particular the feasts of St Francis, St Anthony and the Conception of the Virgin Mary, Lent and Holy Week); 5. the long-term residence or transitory presence of Franciscan or other musicians (among them Francesco Santacroce, Ruffino Bartolucci d’Assisi, Giovanni Nasco, Antonino Barges, Ludovico Balbi, Sisto Galli, Giacomo Antonio Cardilli, Bartolomeo Ratti, Giovanni Antonio Filippini, Gabriello Puliti, Alvise Balbi, Bernardino Diruta, Amadio Freddi, Claudio Cocchi, Giovanni Battista Aloisi, Giacomo Ganassi and Zaccaria Tevo).
