The city of Tokyo has been often represented by European travellers of the late 20th century according to the hermeneutical features that David Morley and Kevin Robins (1995) called ‘techno-orientalism’. By extending and radicalising the theoretical proposal of Said (1978), this perspective consists in a sort of exotic approach to otherness that interprets the technological race, robotics and automation of production processes in the Far-East countries, as a cause of individual sub-humanization (see also Roh, Huang, Niu 2015). Among the experiences that have been re-interpreted in light of these paradigms, one of the most common, at least in the eyes of foreign observers, is pachinko, a gambling game similar to slot machine and pinball. By producing a dialogue between different testimonies of writers, directors, essayists and western photographers who have described this practice as a symbol of Japaneseness, this article aims to show how the synthesis processes that accompany every representation of otherness are often based on circumscribed and foreseeable acts; that is, on acts that overprint a writing phase and a vision phase, recovering theoretical bases and cultural paradigms from the literary and flânerie phantasmic conception proposed by Walter Benjamin in his Passagenwerk (1983).

La città di Tokyo è stata spesso rappresentata dai viaggiatori europei del secondo Novecento secondo quei tratti ermeneutici che David Morley e Kevin Robins (1995), allargando e radicalizzando la proposta teorica di Said (1978), hanno chiamato tecno-orientalismo e che consiste in una sorta di approccio esotico all’alterità che legge la rincorsa tecnologica, la robotica e l’automazione dei processi produttivi dei paesi del FarEast, come causa di processi di sub-umanizzazione dell’individuo (vedi anche Roh, Huang, Niu 2015). Tra le esperienze che vengono rilette alla luce di questi paradigmi, una delle più comuni è quella del pachinko un gioco d’azzardo simile, almeno agli occhi degli osservatori stranieri, alle slot machine e ai flipper. Facendo dialogare tra loro diverse testimonianze di letterati, registi, saggisti e fotografi occidentali che hanno descritto tale pratica ludica come simbolo di giapponesità, il presente articolo vuole mostrare come i processi di sintesi che accompagnano ogni rappresentazione dell’alterità si fondino spesso su atti circo-scritti e pre-visti, ovvero su atti che sovraimprimono una fase di scrittura e una di visione, recuperando basi teoriche e paradigmi culturali dalla concezione letteraria e fantasmatica di flânerie proposta da Walter Benjamin nel suo Passagenwerk (1983).
