The famous artificial harbours of Carthage underwent restorations when the colony was founded and were subsequently modified in lavish manner during the middle Imperial period. In this second phase a new octagonal building was added, whose function is still unclear. The exam of the few known octagonal buildings and their uses, together with a reassessment of the whole context, leads to the hyphotesis that the building was a beacon tower, used to help in the access and docking operations and to watch the entire harbour.

Abstract
The famous artificial harbours of Carthage underwent restorations when the colony was founded and were subsequently modified in lavish manner during the middle Imperial period. In this second phase a new octagonal building was added, whose function is still unclear. The exam of the few known octagonal buildings and their uses, together with a reassessment of the whole context, leads to the hyphotesis that the building was a beacon tower, used to help in the access and docking operations and to watch the entire harbour.File in questo prodotto:
