The famous artificial harbours of Carthage underwent restorations when the colony was founded and were subsequently modified in lavish manner during the middle Imperial period. In this second phase a new octagonal building was added, whose function is still unclear. The exam of the few known octagonal buildings and their uses, together with a reassessment of the whole context, leads to the hyphotesis that the building was a beacon tower, used to help in the access and docking operations and to watch the entire harbour.
