Abstract

The essay addresses for the first time the tight economic game between dowries and fideicommissum. the reference is to the Venetian elite of XVIIIthcentury, but the analysis also extends to a comparative key to other European realities. through new archive sources, the interconnections between patrilinearity and matrilinearity within the Venetian families emerge, even if we must remember that venetian women enjoyed a particular economic and social autonomy at all levels, and this not only with reference to patrician society but in general to the whole society. We must not forget that the moveable goods of dowries, were handled by husbands, but in the case of widowhood the wife inherited the property and could independently manage them. there is no doubt that the fideicommissi, which in Venice were dividui, had immobilized the family patrimony as well as the same dowry insurance. in this sense the research seeks to show the possible cheating in order to make the assets more liquid. We must also consider that the return of the dowry would also allow the untoutchable goods to be unlocked and consequently more free. at the marciana library, perhaps for the first time, we have consulted the discussions of the academy of nobles, which are concentated on the economic decline of Venice, and in particular, the links between doweries and the fideicommis. the debates, which question the benefits that could bring greater capital mobility through a reform of the bonds, demonstrate the inevitable contamination between private business and the public sphere. the young noblemen gathered in these academies (the Contarina and Giustiniana academies) have demostrated different positions even though it is known that no reform is being implemented by Venice in this sense: in real politics the conservative declination always tried not to alter anything in favor of maintaining the status quo.
