Abstract

This paper is a reconstruction of heated Renaissance debates on the reliability of ephemerides, astrological judgments and prognostications. An obscure polemist, Benedetto Altavilla, and two court mathematicians at the Dukes of Savoy, Giovanni Battista Benedetti and his successor, Bartolomeo Cristini, participated in these controversies taking place in Turin, at the end of the sixteenth century. This investigation is based on rare printed books and pamphlets, as well as on manuscripts preserved in Turin archives and libraries. A relevant manuscript document (transcribed in the appendix) sheds new light on the relationship between Benedetti and Cristini.
