«L’inquieta Lucchese». Tracce di Evangelismo nelle opere religiose di Chiara Matraini

This article examines Chiara Matraini’s religious writings, published at the end of the sixteenth century. The texts are analysed in the light of Matraini’s cultural network in Lucca, and in the context of the pro-Reformation writings circulating in Italy before the Council of Trent. The analysis reveals that Matraini’s religious works, although apparently following the Counter Reformation trend to publish devotional literature for Catholic propaganda, contain strands recalling pro-Reformation ideas, that the author had possibly assimilated in her earlier life.
