The chapter deals with left-wing writers Jiang Guangci, Ye Zi, Rou Shi, Zhang Tianyi, Xiao Hong, Xiao Jun, and Sha Ting, active in the 1930s China. They all shared a common view and sense of personal engagement in the dramatic landscape of China's socio-economic and political crisis and were all encouraged and inspired by Chinese intellectual Lu Xun. Nevertheless, in their literary creation, they show distinct features in terms of theoretical approach, style, and perspective, from the early romanticization of the revolutionary theme to the lucid representation of social needs; from the author's subjective commitment to the critical awareness of moral responsibility in literature and art; from the lyrical and psychological depiction to the satirical exposition of reality.
