The novel of Dux Brabantie transmitted in Liber de introducione loquendi written by the Dominican friar Filipino from Ferrara around mid-fourteenth century, shows noticeable lexical and content affinities with Boccaccio’s tale of Messer Torello and Saladin (Dec. X, 9). These affinities are more significant and more relevant compared with those previously observed in other European folkloric texts transmitting similar episodes. In this work the results of a detailed comparison between Boccaccio’s and Filippino’s novels is presented, unearthing new connections and links between this text and the entire tradition of crusading tales, which most important model is represented by Chretien de Troyes’s Yvain.
