The subject of this article is the meaning and function of the Spanish adverb ‘viceversa’ in contrast to ‘al contrario’ and ‘en cambio’. It is argued that ‘viceversa’ is a focal discourse marker that conventionally imposes a specific informative structure [contrastive topic / contrastive focus] on the second sentence. The informative meaning of ‘viceversa’ is a good example of the close relationship between informative structure and syntax.
