This paper presents preliminary results from a research on an Italian group of at risk students and drop out students re-engaged in VET schools. Although partial, the data collected highlight a vulnerability of agency of these young people which varies. Furthermore, the data show the presence of economic and socio-cultural variables that indicate a high risk of social marginalization. The European and Italian policies assign to VET a key role in prevention and compensation of school dropout. Differently from what is claimed, VET cannot be considered the umbrella solution for early school leaving. Tackling ESL should take greater account of factors that may affect the agency of young people. More evidence of research can help the debate in this field and address educational policies.
