The paper analyses an inscription currently preserved at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Este, but originally most probably from the area of Altinum (Regio X Venetia et Histria), and elaborates on two main issues: 1) the role of high rank women in local epigraphy and 2) the juridical and administrative problems rising from the occurrence of the word "praefectura" on the document examined.
