This paper deals with the problems of testing the productive skills of primary school learners of English. It reports the findings of the 'Ianua Linguarum' experimentation of a syllabus informed by the communicative and 'ludic' approaches. These problems include the establishing of benchmarks, scorer reliabilty, the evaluation of minimal production, and, especially, the notion of communication.
