This paper examines José Emilio Pacheco’s short story “Cuando salí de La Habana, Válgame Dios” (1972), in order to analyze the relationships between the temporal flux and the isotopy of the sea, and their link to death by water in the narration. This paper also mirrors the way in which the text enacts a thanatological discourse by concretizing it into the mitheme of the ghost ship.
