The complex trans-[PtCl(COCH2CH2Ph)(PPh3)2]•EtOH (I) has been synthesized by treating cis-[PtCl2(PPh3)2] with styrene in EtOH at 100° under 50 atm of carbon monoxide and of hydrogen. In combination with SnCl2•2H2O, complex I is an intermediate in the catalytic hydroformylation of styrene. The crystal structure of I has been detd. by x-ray crystallog. The Pt atom is in a slightly distorted square-planar environment.

Abstract
