La valenza dell'amore nei versi di un poeta indiano fra passato e presente: il personaggio e la ghazal di Jigar Muradabadi (1890-1960)

The present article focuses on an Indian poet whose poetic activity fell into the first half of the 20th century and the way he presents the universal topic of love in his lyrical verses. After providing a contextual framework of the main characteristics of the cultural environment of India and Indo-Muslim literature in general and the specific genre of the ghazal in particular during the period concerned, the study intends to outline some of the most striking features of the poet’s way of defining the values of love, a timeless topic of universal appeal which for centuries has been a favourite of Urdu poets. The aim of the study is to analyze the reasons for his successful bid to communicate the message of love through the traditional channel of the ghazal during a time when the conventional values of the old order had been questioned by the advent of modernity and Indian society at large had to provide answers in order to stand up to the challenge
