The article argues that the inscriptions in the church of St. Maria in Cosmedin in Rome, consecrated by Callixtus II in 1123, were placed regard to their architectural and liturgical significance. All the inscriptions are in the choir – in the presbiterium, sanctuarium and solea – along to the primary axis of the central nave of the church. The disposition of epigraphical texts was conceived with reference to the ritual of the mass and the separation between priests and laity. The most important epigraphs (the consecration of the pope Callixtus II and the dedication by Alfanus camerarius) reveal the same graphic design, which probably came from contemporary epigraphs in France.
