The article analyzes Joseph Conrad's novella "The Duel" and its filmic version, entitled "The Duellists," by Ridley Scott. The focus of the analysis is Conrad's and Scott's different treatment of aristocratic and bourgeois heroism and anti-heroism in the novell'a's and film's protagonists. Special attention is given to Conrad's ironic strategies towards the heroic code of duelling, and Scott's more sublime treatment of it.
