Anaerobic digestion of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) has received growing attention during the last few years. To fully develop this procedure at a commercial level, however, it is necessary to focus attention on reactor stability. The aim of this study was to examine the behavior of the digestion process of OFMSW using improved buffering conditions achieved by using the effluent supernatant fraction of the digester to dilute the incoming wastes. It is concluded that recirculation of the effluent stream provides good buffering conditions in the digester and does not adversely affect the digester microorganisms. It assures a much higher process stability and leads to a significant water and energy savings, reduction of wastewater requiring treatment, and enhancement of biogas composition in that methane content increased by 7 percent.
