Along with the affirmation of cinema as the major entertainment of modern cities, film stars enter the Shanghai public scene in the 1920s and 1930s. This articles discusses how the shaping of the star-system, taking Hollywood as a model, contributed to the definition of a visual culture which interestingly mixed Western and Chinese elements.
