This work aims at critically analysing the existing French and Italian translations of Yu Dafu’s 郁達夫 (1896-1945) fiction. The methodological model integrates the neo-hermeneutical approach with the technical tools provided by the linguistic and textual approaches to translation studies: resorting to this critical scheme and to accurate text analysis, the distinctive features of the author’s literary technique, as well as the problems and translation strategies adopted by different translators with reference to the linguistic (phonological, lexical, syntactic and textual), cultural and personal factors influencing the process of translation, are discussed. In the last analysis, this research aims at outlining a systematic model covering the problems that can be encountered in translating the May Fourth literary language, suggesting translation strategies allowing to safeguard the complexity and specificity of the original work and its language.
