This thesis places its focus on the pervasiveness of lexical bundles found in spoken Italian, based on the corpus Lessico di frequenza dell'italiano parlato, as well as on academic discourse. Starting from the theoretical perspectives on the studies of word combinations, this thesis offers an overview of grammatical structures and discourse functions of the lexical bundles as a means to demonstrate their importance in formulating discourse. By analyzing the registers of colloquial speech and of academic prose along with an in-depth analysis of three languages for specific purposes in respect to history, philosophy and occupational medicine, this thesis intends to demonstrate how the register and discipline variation result essential in the study of formulaic patterns. By acknowledging the predominance of the lexical bundles within languages for specific purposes and their variations throughout scientific spheres, this research serves to establish that the lexical bundles should be integrated within the lexical-syntactical characteristics of the languages for specific purposes aforementioned.
