Il partito degli sconfitti : la factio di Agrippina Maggiore all'esordio del principato

The foundation of the Principate brought to an end the political freedom of the Roman Republic and shifted the debate from the traditional places (senate and comitia) to a new site, the court. This research aims to investigate the opposition during the reign of Tiberius, focusing on Agrippina the Elder’s action. The reconstruction of the biography of Augustus’ granddaughter and of the political action put in place by the matron and by her entourage as well as the analysis of the ideas and of the ways of communicate used by the group with the basis of the consensus enabled to detect the groups and the members that during the reign of Tiberius animated the political debate, to determine their identity and their goals as well as to explain, in the broader perspective of the political role of the court, the dynamics of matrons’ political participation in the early empire.
