Methods for the characterization of atmospheric particulate matter (PM) < 100 µm have been investigated. The chemical and physical characteristics of PM have been studied, some organic pollutants (PAHs) have been determined along with their elemental composition together with the distribution of these analytes among size classes. The study was carried out the following cities: Sarajevo, Belgrade and Venice, and comparison of the chemical composition of PM were made along with an evaluation of the potential sources of contamination and the level of carcinogenic risk. There is evidence that vehicle traffic in all cities is the main source of PAHs, while the elementary composition differentiates Sarajevo and Belgrade from Venice: in Sarajevo and Belgrade the contribution is related to anthropogenic and geochemical characteristics while in Venice the crustal contribution is irrelevant. The risk assessment indicates Sarajevo as the city with the highest level of risk, followed by Belgrade and Venice.

Abstract
The risk assessment indicates Sarajevo as the city with the highest level of risk, followed by Belgrade and Venice.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
