This chapter reconsiders the relationship between Eastern and Western Christianity, challenging the idea that they were two clearly defined and separate worlds. It situates Byzantine Christianity within the plural landscape of Eastern Christian traditions and traces the gradual development of ecclesiastical and theological differences between Constantinople and Rome. From the iconoclast controversy and the Photian crisis to the events of 1054, the Fourth Crusade, the councils of Lyons and Ferrara-Florence, and the rejection of the Florentine Union in 1484, the chapter examines how doctrinal disputes, linguistic and ritual differences, political interests, and competing understandings of ecclesial authority shaped relations between the two traditions. It argues that 1054 did not mark a definitive break: separation emerged through a long, complex process of interaction, conflict, and attempted reconciliation, against the background of a shared Christian heritage.
