What remains of vocational education and training when machines learn to make decisions, classify, and predict? This book addresses a question that spans two thousand years of the history of work and its pedagogy, bringing that history into dialogue with the present: from craft workshops to industrial *Bildung*, from the thought of Dewey and Hessen to the challenges posed today by artificial intelligence and automation. Drawing on a capability-oriented perspective, the author reconceptualizes vocational education and training not as preparation for narrowly defined tasks, but as an educational infrastructure capable of expanding people's substantive freedoms: their ability to choose, interpret, and transform their own actions in work and life. Competence, agency, and knowledge are brought together within an original theoretical framework that interweaves the Capability Approach, Cultural-Historical Activity Theory, powerful knowledge, and heutagogical perspectives. Through a rigorous analysis of European and Italian policies and a critical reappraisal of teacher professionalism, the book advances a clear argument: what is at stake in vocational education and training is not adaptation to technological change, but the capacity to make that change intelligible, open to critical scrutiny, and subject to human governance in the service of a more just, reflective, and democratic society. A book for those who study, teach, and design vocational education and training in the age of intelligent machines.
