In an examination of the limits of interpreting Golden Age texts, this article focuses on Lope’s comedy La prueba de los ingenios: after briefly considering certain tendencies in postmodern readings, it turns to the play’s homoerotic temptation within the dynamics of deception and disguise, ultimately arguing that the work offers an example of danger averted in extremis and reflects critically on the limits of comedy.
