This volume examines one of the most controversial and timely topics in Aristotle’s philosophy: his reflections on the nature of thought and its relationship with the body. The inseparable unity of soul and body is reflected in Aristotelian analyses of passions such as anger and fear, as well as characteristic activities like perception, imagination, and desire. While maintaining the psychophysical nature of these "affections," Aristotle nonetheless defends the "unmixed" nature and "separability" of thought. To address this issue, the author provides a detailed reconstruction of Aristotelian philosophy of mind by adopting a "physiological" perspective—that is, in light of Aristotle's philosophy of nature, biology, and "chemistry." What emerges is an original conception of the soul and thought, which once again highlights, under a new light, Aristotle's relevance to the contemporary debate on the mind-body problem.
